York County VOAD Long Term Recovery Committee to benefit Ida survivors

June 14, 2022

Within days, 500 families had filed damage reports with the York County Office of Emergency Management (OEM). County and local officials did on-scene damage assessments. Pennsylvania applied for, and was granted, a federal disaster declaration. Eventually, an Individual Assistance declaration was also approved. This was the first time since the flooding from Irene and Lee in 2011 that Pennsylvania received an Individual Assistance declaration. Almost 3,000 York County families applied for federal aid. For many this was enough to get back on their feet again, but not for everyone.

York County VOAD and York County OEM know there are families with unmet needs. There are families with mold, without hot water or heat. There are families who cannot use parts of their home because of flood damage. Other families have problems with accessibility due to washed out culverts and bridges.

In October of 2021, York County VOAD established a Long Term Recovery Committee. Maybe you saw reports on TV or read the news paper between Thanksgiving and Christmas last year. The York Daily Record (YDR) teamed up with the York County Community Foundation (YCCF) to raise funds for Ida survivors. YCCF is holding these funds until federal dollars can be used to put Disaster Case Management (DCM) in place.

Your help is needed. In the coming weeks and months the Long Term Recovery Committee will be reaching out to York County residents who still have needs as a result of damage from Ida. The committee will also be reaching out to you, asking for your support through various fund raising efforts. These appeals will hopefully show up in the media, on social media outlets and come from county and local officials. We ask every to help in any way within their ability, every bit of money and labor will help. There will be more information to follow.
